The next CCU-CSC National Executive Board (NEB) meeting is being held in St. John’s, NL on June 8 & 9, 2024 at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland – 115 Cavendish Square, St. John’s, NL.
In collaboration with CUSW, equally exciting news, we are very happy to share that Dan Plexman, International Professional Workplace Safety Expert, has agreed to attend as the keynote speaker. Dan was in his fourth year of an apprenticeship in the electrical field when he was seriously injured on the job. Despite trying to address safety concerns with his supervisors, Dan found himself learning and working in a very lax safety culture during his apprenticeship.
One day changed everything for Dan when working in a manlift and coming in close proximity to live overhead power-lines. An electrical arc flash fire resulted, which caused 3 to 6 degree burns to 60% of Dan’s body before he fell the 17 feet to the ground. At the hospital, doctors gave him only a 13% chance of surviving this preventable accident.
But through his extraordinary determination, Dan miraculously recovered and took on a new challenge – becoming a leading safety advocate, speaking to tens of thousands of people throughout North America about healthier and safer workplaces. Dan’s bio can be viewed on the following YouTube below.

Also speaking is Yvonne Earle, a representative from the Avalon Chapter of the Council of Canadians. She will be speaking about Pharmacare, and the federal government’s recent efforts to create a universal, public drug program for all Canadians.
In addition, Rhea Rollman, (she/her), at right, is an award-winning journalist, writer and audio producer based in St. John’s, NL, and is the author of A Queer History of Newfoundland (Engen Books, 2023). She will be speaking on community-centered independent journalism and equity issues.
Also on the agenda is John Peters, an associate professor at Memorial University, who holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Sociology. He is currently working with UNIFOR, the USW, and the CSN-FIM on a joint partnership project exploring union strategies for a just transition. John will be talking about how unions today are leading on climate change and creating good jobs.

The cancellation policy for each individual reservation is 48 hours prior to the arrival date. Less than 48 hours, the credit card used to secure the room will be charged for one night plus applicable taxes.
