On July 1, as we gather with family, friends, and neighbours to celebrate Canada Day, the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) extends its warmest wishes to working people across the country. Today is a day to reflect on the immense benefits we share as residents of this nation, chief among them our deeply cherished realities of freedom, democracy, and a diverse multicultural fabric that strengthens our collective identity.

Yet true democracy is about more than just casting a ballot every few years. It is about human dignity, systemic fairness, and ensuring that every individual has a voice, both in the halls of government and on the shop floor. While we celebrate how far we have come, we must also acknowledge that there is still a long way to go.

Too many working families continue to struggle against the crushing weight of an affordability crisis, stagnant real wages, and eroded public services. True freedom cannot fully exist when workers are forced to choose between paying rent or buying groceries, or when access to universal healthcare and secure housing remains out of reach for vulnerable communities.

This is precisely where the labour movement has always stepped in. The history of Canada is fundamentally intertwined with the history of its unions. Almost every major progressive social milestone we now take for granted, from the eight-hour workday and the weekend to paid parental leave, workplace safety regulations, and public pensions, was fought for and won by organized labour. Unions have never just bargained for their own members. We fight for the collective uplift of all Canadians.

As we look toward the future, the CCU remains steadfastly committed to this legacy. Unions will always be directly involved in the foundational work of making Canada a better, more equitable country. We will continue to march on the front lines for deeper social justice, systemic equality, and the expansion of workers’ rights. We will champion a fairer economy where wealth is equitably shared and where the right to organize is universally respected.

Let us use this Canada Day not just as an occasion for celebration, but as a moment of rededication. Together, as workers, advocates, and citizens, we can bridge the gap between the Canada we have and the Canada we know is possible, a nation defined by genuine equality, unwavering justice, and dignity for all. Happy Canada Day!
