June is 2SLGBTQ* Pride Month, and the CCU has created three new posters that you and your affiliates can print for their workplaces or share online.
This month is dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride. Pride Month began after the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City.
The Confederation of Canadian Unions has proudly supported the rights of the 2SLGBTQ* community in Canada and throughout the world since the 1980s. This June, there’s a lot to be proud of in Canada. Our country ranks fifth in the Equaldex International Rankings, which measures equality, justice and human rights for 2SLGBTQ* people, behind Malta, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
Yet even in Canada and throughout the world, the struggle continues. Tens of millions of 2SLGBTQ* people everywhere face discrimination, violence, harassment and prejudice. Labour unions and progressive activists must stand up for full equality and human rights for the 2SLGBTQ* community.
