Confederation-of-Canadian-Unions-Celebrates-2SLGBTQI+-Pride-CCU-2

Every June, communities across Canada and around the world come together to celebrate 2SLGBTQI+ Pride Month. For the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU), Pride is not just a time for colourful celebrations. It is a profound opportunity to reaffirm our foundational commitment to equity, freedom, and fairness for everyone.

As a fiercely democratic and progressive independent labour central, the CCU believes that true solidarity cannot exist without inclusivity. We believe that diversity and the individual autonomy of all people must be cherished in environments entirely free from prejudice and discrimination. This commitment guides our ongoing advocacy, bargaining efforts, and public campaigns to ensure that 2SLGBTQI+ members feel protected, valued, and empowered in their workplaces and throughout broader society.

Historically, the labour movement has always stood for the principles of human rights, human dignity, and social justice. Organized labour was built on the core maxim that “an injury to one is an injury to all.” Workers have long recognized that the struggle for economic justice is fundamentally tied to the struggle for civil rights. You cannot have a fair workplace if a segment of workers is subjected to harassment, unequal pay, or wrongful termination simply because of who they love or how they identify.

Unions have often been at the forefront of societal shifts toward equality. Long before federal and provincial governments enacted legislative protections, progressive unions were negotiating ground-breaking collective agreements. In the 1980s and 1990s, decades when systemic homophobia and transphobia were institutional norms, the CCU and other visionary labour organisations began fighting publicly for full equality.

Unions historically championed the inclusion of anti-discrimination clauses based on sexual orientation in collective agreements, fought for equal benefits for same-sex partners, and laid the groundwork for the eventual legalisation of same-sex marriage in Canada.

Today, that legacy of activism remains as critical as ever. While Canada has made remarkable strides toward equality, the global and domestic landscape reveals that the struggle is far from over. Tens of millions of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals continue to face discrimination, harassment, and targeted violence. Furthermore, we are witnessing a deeply concerning rise in anti-2SLGBTQI+ rhetoric, disinformation, and coordinated political rollbacks that specifically target trans and gender-diverse youth.

Right-wing factions frequently attempt to use these vulnerable populations as scapegoats to distract from economic mismanagement and divide working-class people.

The CCU refuses to let these divisive tactics weaken our collective strength. True freedom means the ability to live and work safely as your authentic self. Fairness means ensuring equal access to healthcare, employment opportunities, and safety, without fear of reprisal. Equity requires that we actively dismantle systemic barriers and provide robust workplace protections, including comprehensive anti-harassment policies and gender-affirming healthcare benefits negotiated right at the bargaining table.

As we celebrate Pride Month, the CCU honours the brave activists who paved the way, from the historic Stonewall Riots of 1969 to the modern frontlines of gender justice. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2SLGBTQI+ workers, community organisations, and progressive allies across the globe. Love unites us, and human rights are non-negotiable.

The Confederation of Canadian Unions proudly commits to keeping the spirit of Pride alive not just throughout June, but in every single grievance we file, every collective agreement we negotiate, and every action we take all year long.
