As we welcome the New Year, the Confederation of Canadian Unions extends warm wishes of solidarity and hope to our members and to working people in every community across Canada. A new year offers a moment to reflect on how far we have come—and to recommit ourselves to the work that still lies ahead.
The progress working people have achieved was never handed to us. Through collective action and perseverance, unions have won safer workplaces, better wages, pensions, public health care, paid vacations, parental leave, and protections against discrimination. These victories are the result of generations of workers standing together and demanding dignity, fairness, and respect. They remind us that progress is possible when solidarity is stronger than division.
Yet we begin this year knowing that significant challenges remain. Workers’ rights and union rights continue to face attacks from corporate interests and short-sighted policies that prioritize profit over people. Too many workers are struggling with rising costs, job insecurity, and the erosion of good, unionized employment. Inequality—whether based on income, race, gender, disability, or immigration status—continues to undermine social justice and weaken our communities.
In the year ahead, the CCU remains committed to fighting for strong collective bargaining rights, protecting good-paying jobs, and expanding public services that benefit everyone. We will continue to stand up for equity, inclusion, and fairness, and to push back against efforts to divide working people or silence their voices. We know that a transition to a sustainable economy must put workers and communities first, leaving no one behind.
The New Year calls us to renew our solidarity and our resolve. Together, we can meet the challenges ahead, defend what we have won, and build a more equal, democratic, and compassionate Canada. United, working people will continue to shape a better future—for ourselves, and for generations to come.
