The Better Way for Independent Unions in Canada
The Confederation of Canadian Unions represents more than just a collection of individual workers. It embodies the values of a diverse and inclusive community. At the heart of our union family lies a simple yet profound truth: we are stronger together than we are apart. Unity is the bedrock upon which our collective strength is built, and it is the key to our continued success.
There are over 600,000 members in 260 different independent unions in Canada who would benefit enormously by joining the Confederation of Canadian Unions. The vast majority of these unions have less than 2,000 members, and life is very lonely for them. Especially in a time of stagnating wages and radically increasing inequality, times are very tough for workers – and unions – who are out there alone in the wilderness.
Our economy is in the throes of crises and uncertainty, and governments and employers throughout the world are making workers pay the price. The CCU believes that it is imperative for smaller and medium sized unions in Canada to work together in fighting austerity and protecting the interests of working people.
But when unions come together, we amplify our voices, increase our bargaining power, and create a more formidable force for change. We can challenge unjust labour practices, push for higher wages, and demand safer working conditions. We can stand up to powerful corporations and governments that seek to undermine workers' rights.
The CCU is a highly democratic organization, whose unique structure brings workers from all over the country together, yet acknowledges the independence of affiliated unions. The CCU organizes activities such as public events, conventions and lively workshop conferences that educate members on a variety of issues, such as organizing, communications strategy and collective bargaining. The sharing of knowledge and best practices between our affiliates is one of the best advantages of belonging to the CCU.
As a member of the CCU, your union will not be an observer, but an active participant in directing the future of the labour movement in Canada.
