The Crofton pulp mill — a cornerstone of the Vancouver Island forestry economy for generations — has been permanently closed by Domtar. It was not just jobs that were lost, but a way of life for hundreds of hardworking families across the Cowichan Valley and beyond. More than 350 PPWC workers suddenly faced uncertainty and hardship as an industry they had poured their skills and sweat into since day one disappeared.
PPWC members have been promised an extension of EI benefits, worker transition training, the addition of retirement bridge funding, and other measures that will support them during this difficult time. But they are still waiting for those promises to become a reality.
PPWC President Geoff Dawe has created a House of Commons online petition with MP Jeff Kibble. According to the Petitions Guide: “If there are at least 500 valid signatures, the Clerk of Petitions will issue a certificate to the member of Parliament who authorized the online publication of the petition. It can then be presented to the House by any member. A record of this presentation will appear in the Journals for that day and the petitioner, supporters and signatories of the petition will be advised by email after its presentation.”
This is why it’s so important to get this petition signed by as many people as possible. Having it read in the House of Commons will bring us one step closer to having PPWC workers at Crofton receive the supports they need.
