June is 2SLGBTQ* Pride Month. It is dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride. Pride Month began after the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York City.
The Confederation of Canadian Unions has proudly supported the rights of the 2SLGBTQ* community in Canada and throughout the world since the 1980s. This June, there’s much to be proud of in Canada. Our country ranks 13th in the Equaldex International Rankings, which measures equality, justice and human rights for 2SLGBTQ* people.
Yet in Canada and throughout the world, the struggle continues, and there is still so much more to do. Tens of millions of 2SLGBTQ* people everywhere face discrimination, violence, harassment and prejudice. Labour unions and progressive activists must stand up for full equality and human rights for the 2SLGBTQ* community.
