Joining a labour union is one of the best and influential decisions a worker can make in his or her life. Unions have a long history of protecting the rights of workers, fighting for social justice and equality, and bettering the working lives of millions of Canadians.
The long-term benefits of becoming a member of a union are enormous. Statistics show that in Canada, workers have far better working conditions, an average of 29% higher pay, superior benefits and pensions, longer paid vacation time, and safer and more democratic and egalitarian workplaces.
The Constitution of the PPWC is structured to maximize rank-and-file participation in national and local union affairs. National officers are fully accountable to our union’s National Executive Board and are elected by referendum ballot.

Public libraries are the heart and soul of communities across Nova Scotia. They are far more than just places to borrow books—they provide vital services that thousands of Nova Scotians rely on every single day. From Sydney to Yarmouth, and everywhere in between, libraries foster education, support local economies, and build true community connection.
For families, they are a safe harbour offering early literacy programs and child-centred learning activities. For students and remote workers, they provide quiet study spaces and critical access to high-speed internet. For newcomers, seniors, and vulnerable citizens, library workers act as an indispensable lifeline—routinely helping folks navigate complex digital systems, file their taxes, apply for jobs, and connect with crucial social services. Our public libraries are unparalleled hubs for social inclusion and lifelong learning.
Yet, despite serving as the backbone of our communities, Nova Scotia’s public libraries are facing an unprecedented crisis. Flatlined and static provincial funding has failed to keep pace with skyrocketing inflation. Library boards across the province are being forced to make heartbreaking decisions, including cutting operational hours and permanently closing essential rural branches. Rural Nova Scotians should not be forced to travel to the next town over just to access a computer.
It is time for the Nova Scotia government to step up and fund our public libraries properly.

#NSUPE is outraged to hear about the closure of five of eleven libraries in the Annapolis Valley Regional Library; Lawrencetown, Middleton, Hantsport, Kentville, and Port Williams libraries will all be closing. While we knew cuts were coming, the magnitude of the cuts is extreme.
We will not take these cuts sitting down. We will organize throughout the Annapolis Valley to advocate for the proper funding of our public libraries and to ensure our communities continue to have access to the services they depend on. We will provide more information in the coming days as more information is released.

The Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) is dedicated to the establishment of a democratic, independent Canadian labour movement free of the influence of American-based international unions.
The CCU includes almost 20,000 members in affiliated unions in both the public and private sector. Our members represent a diversity of talents: health care workers, forestry workers, researchers, university staff, communications experts, construction workers and administrative personnel, just to name a few.
Joining a labour union is one of the best and influential decisions a worker can make in his or her life. Unions have a long history of protecting the rights of workers, fighting for social justice and equality, and bettering the working lives of millions of Canadians.
