The Nova Scotia Liberals are in the process of passing legislation that will reportedly take away the right of the province’s health care workers to choose the union that represents them through a democratic vote. The legislation also dictates terms in workers contracts outside of the collective bargaining process.
In light of recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions, we find it impossible to believe that the McNeil government is not willingly and purposefully passing an illegal law specifically written to violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and to undermine the rights of all workers in Nova Scotia.
This comes on the heels of a Bill that the government passed earlier this year to effectively ban strikes across broad sectors of the economy, which also violates the Charter. The Confederation of Canadian Unions calls on the McNeil government to cease its practice of blatantly and illegally violating the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and attacking the rights of working people in Nova Scotia.
