The members of Local 19 of the Nova Scotia Union of Public and Private Employees (NSUPE) walked off the job on Labour Day. Their employer, Canadian Blood Services, refuses to guarantee hours to these workers who are all part-time and provide a vital service to our health care system.
The workers simply want parity with their colleagues who perform the same duties in Halifax. Meanwhile, the CEO of Canadian Blood Services, Graham Sher, continues to pull down a salary of over $700,000 a year while the organization constantly looks to cut worker hours and force its part timers into a precarious workforce in order to pad management’s six figure salaries.
The CCU recognizes the huge contribution that these workers make to health care both in Prince Edward Island and across Canada.
