In October 2019, the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) held its 50th Anniversary Convention in Ottawa.
Réal Lavergne is the President of Fair Vote Canada, and he spoke to the CCU about efforts to reform Canada’s electoral system to one that is proportional and democratic, unlike the “First Past the Post” system it has today. Réal discussed the role Fair Vote Canada is playing is this struggle, and what working people can do to help educate others about the need for proportional representation.
The aim of Fair Vote Canada is to gain broad, multi-partisan support for an independent, citizen-driven process to allow Canadians to choose a fair voting system based on the principles that all voters are equal, and that every vote must count.
